Do I have to bring a partner?
No. It is usual in Scottish country dancing for dancers to change partners for each dance. This adds to the social aspects of the dance, and allows you an opportunity to meet and dance with lots of people.
Do I have to wear special clothes?
No. For ladies it is useful to wear a light top and wide skirt, to allow for free movement. Men who have worn a kilt prefer to do so for dancing, but this is not essential. In time, most dancers buy a pair of dancing shoes, but for beginners soft soled shoes are recommended.
Is there an age limit?
So long as you are willing to have a good time, there is no restriction on age. The Hamilton Branch has dancers from ages 4 to 85, all of whom enjoy Scottish country dancing in their own way.
Where can I learn to dance?
The RSCDS has local associations and branches around the world, all providing opportunities for everyone to attend a class. In the Hamilton area, the Branch is always willing to welcome new dancers. The Branch hosts classes of all levels from beginner to advanced. We have social dances once a month to live music.
